told or been told sooner that the fbi was investigating a case involving the director of the cia. we're keeping them honest as we do every night not to take sides, you can get that on other cable news channels, but to look for the truth, the facts. here's what we know right now about who knew what and when. according to "wall street journal" the fbi discovered the affair between petraeus and his biographer, paula broadwell, in late summer. we'll have more on how in just a moment. so the fbi reportedly knew in late summer that the head of the cia was having an affair, but it wasn't until months later after election day that president obama found out, and the house and senate intelligence committees didn't find out until friday. congressional leaders from both parties are angry, they say they should have been notified sooner that there were potential national security issues. senate intelligence committee chair dianne feinstein said today she is going to investigate why the fbi didn't tell oversight committees about the investigation. >> a decision was made somewhere not to brief us wh

on thursday with the other actors involved here. as far as why i believe it was handled wrong by the fbi, first of all to have something like this a cyber harassment case rise to the level of an fbi investigation. when it reached the cia director, have the fbi investigate the director of of the cia and the president or the attorney general not be notified of it is a dereliction of duty. the president if he was not told should have been told and that to me was somebody really dropping the ball. the other thing makes the whole thing implausible is you have a four, five, six-month investigation whatever it was. nothing comes out, nothing is disclosed. suddenly on election night the fbi announces the investigation is over and they tell general clapper. the next day the white house finds out about it, the next day general petraeus submits his resignation. friday the president accepts the resignation. we find yesterday the fbi raiding the home of paula broadwell. then we find out general allen has been involved in emails with joe kelley, so you have like four or five different events happening

this woman, jill kelley, a married tampa bay socialite, complained to the fbi that she was receiving harassing e-mails from an anonymous sender. she registered the complaint this past summer. the fbi investigated and in the process discovered the sender was paula broadwell. and that also broadwell had an affair with petraeus. the e-mails to kelley stemmed from broadwell's apparent jealousy of kelley's relationship with petraeus. there is no evidence that kelley had an affair with petraeus. the kelley family acknowledged that they were friendly with the petraeus family. by late october, under questioning from the fbi, both petraeus and broadwell had admitted to the affair. on november 6th, election day, the fbi notified the director of national intelligence, james clapper, of the affair. clapper advised petraeus to step down, and within days, petraeus did. question, is there more to this affair than meets the eye? pat buchanan. >> i don't think there's a great deal more than what we already know, john. a lot of people are attacking the fbi for investigating those harassing e-mails run

been through all of the newspaper articles that the fbi has pretty much concluded there was no transfer of classified information from general petraeus to paula broadwell. i'm not convinced we know the full answers to that yet. why then did the fbi spend four hours at paula broadwell's home last night. point number two, how is it general pa contemporaneous and paula broadwell were able to share a private e-mail account where they saved e-mails in draft folders and the other person logged in to that same log in so they could read the same e-mails in the draft folder. it is a common technique used by other people in our own government as well as terrorists use that. it's a way to keep your e-mail off the public server that your company or g mail or yahoo or whoever it is could look at. the other thing that interested me was a nugget inside some of "the washington post" reporting today which is that petraeus told broadwell this summer to stop sending the harassing e-mails to kelly because kelly had told petraeus that she found out where she was getting those e-mails from. that was about th
